Scope

QMAX was entrusted with the critical task of upgrading and renewing the fire pumps on a wharf in southern NSW. Our unique position as the original suppliers of the vertical turbine pumps back in 2002 gave us an inherent advantage. Working closely with the onsite remediation contractor through a detailed design phase, we removed and disposed of the old system and engineered, supplied, and installed two new state-of-the-art vertical turbine pumps. One was an electric-driven system, and the other, a diesel-driven backup, ensuring unwavering redundancy. We meticulously selected and fabricated these pumps using seawater-grade super-duplex stainless steel, guaranteeing exceptional durability in the harsh marine environment. Our team managed the changeover with precision, maintaining continuous fire pump availability throughout each phase, thereby safeguarding the wharf from any vulnerability.

Challenges

This project posed significant engineering and logistical hurdles when removing the old system and installing the new system. Integrating the new pumps within the sensitive operational environment required, meticulous planning and execution. Ensuring uninterrupted fire protection, required one pump to be online during each phase of the changeover demanding intricate coordination and seamless transitions. The corrosive marine environment required specialised materials and a robust design to withstand being submerged in seawater. The project’s critical nature demanded a rapid and efficient implementation to maintain constant operational readiness. Leveraging our expertise in specialised pumping systems and our commitment to robust engineering and long-lasting systems, we were able to successfully deliver a solution that not only met but exceeded the stringent performance and reliability requirements of the wharf.
