Scope

BMD, a leading Australian construction company, approached QMAX, when they were awarded the Richmond System Wastewater Upgrade contract by Sydney Water. This $100-200 million ongoing project aims to increase the capacity of the Richmond Water Resource Recovery Facility (WRP) and the North Richmond Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) to accommodate a projected 70% population growth in the region over the next 30 years. The project scope includes building a new pump station, upgrading three existing pumping stations, and constructing a 6.9-kilometer-long transfer pipeline to connect the North Richmond system to the WRP. This infrastructure upgrade is crucial to ensure the continued reliable and efficient treatment of wastewater in the region and meet Sydney Water’s Environmental Project Authority license requirements. BMD recognised the need for a robust and reliable macerator solution to handle the high flow rates (150-200 L/s) and accommodate a significant presence of rags and other debris within the wastewater stream. QMAX, with its expertise in designing and manufacturing high-performance macerator systems, was well-positioned to provide a solution that could meet the demanding requirements of this critical project.

Challenges

The Richmond Wastewater System Upgrade presented significant challenges. Working within a densely populated area demanded meticulous planning and coordination to minimise disruption to the community. The construction of the 6.9-kilometer transfer pipeline required careful consideration of existing infrastructure and environmental sensitivities. High volumes of wastewater, laden with solids and wet wipes, posed a significant risk of damage to the macerator and downstream equipment due to potential clogging. QMAX’s solution had to be exceptionally durable and resistant to wear and tear, ensuring continuous operation while minimising maintenance. A reliable macerator operation was crucial for maintaining the integrity of the wastewater treatment process and preventing environmental impacts for future generations. The project’s tight timeline and budget demanded a cost-effective and efficient macerator solution that could seamlessly integrate into the upgrade plan. QMAX, with its focus on innovative and cost-effective solutions, successfully delivered a system meeting the project’s specific needs and budget.
